The Supreme Court had taken suo motu cognisance of the Kolkata rape and murder case. Supreme Court Chief Justice D.S. Y. Chandrachud expressed concern. They also raised slogans against the West Bengal government. The Supreme Court also pulled up the West Bengal government for the three-hour delay in registering the case.

The post-mortem report had come much earlier. Why was the incident reported at 11.45 pm? This was questioned in high court. "The post-mortem revealed that the doctor was murdered and an FIR was registered at 11.45 pm. What were you doing in the hospital for 3 hours?"The court asked. He also questioned why the authorities were unable to maintain law and order in the area.

The Supreme Court constituted a National Task Force under its authority to suggest procedures for the safety of doctors at their workplaces. "It will have doctors from diverse backgrounds who will suggest practices to be followed across India so that there is a workplace safety scenario and young or middle-aged doctors are safe in their work environment," Chandrachud said.

'A mob attacked the hospital, causing significant damage to the facilities. What were the police doing? The police need to secure the crime scene first,' he remarked.
